Just hanging out
and doing nothing in particular is often the best part of a vacation stay. The Hacienda offers several ways to accomplish exactly that! The several porches offer views of the surrounding dunes and ocean as you take in the sun or peruse that book you've been meaning to get to for ages.
The patio has tables for spreading out on, or places to get busy while you prepare something for the grill. The grilling station has a side burner and rotisserie as well. There is a full kitchen stocked with tableware and cooking stuff in the utility building off to one side. The chiminea (fireplace) is a popular gathering spot in the evening.
The family room in the lower level of the main house has a TV/VCR combo next to the fireplace, and a comfy couch to settle into. Across the room is a game table for hosting Backgammon, Scrabble or Monopoly matches or, for puzzle fanatics, working on one of the always challenging jigsaw puzzles.

Other things to do -
The Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans, or CEDO, as it is better known, is just down the road from the Hacienda. CEDO offers ecological information, guided nature explorations, and tours of the surrounding dunes and nearby estuaries of the Sea of Cortez, where a variety of sea life and birds may be seen. For more information about CEDO activities scroll down this page to the events schedule.
The CETMAR aquarium, located behind the school just before the Las Conchas entrance gate, has specimens of the varied sea life of this unique salt water habitat; hours of operation are posted at the entrance, just before you enter the Las Conchas development.
A saltwater estuary penetrates the desert just "over the hill" from the Hacienda, with egrets, shorebirds, and an operating oyster farm.
Sunbathing and ocean swimming are just a few steps away on the wide sandy beaches of Las Conchas.
Kayaking is a favorite activity of residents and guests alike. Rental kayaks are available in Rocky Point.
There are miles of roads and dunes trails to explore within the Las Conchas gated community of which the Hacienda is a part. Bring your walking shoes or mountain bike.
The outdoor patio at the Hacienda features a large gas grill and a full kitchen and is available for use by guests at any time. Many of our guests like to purchase shrimp and other seafood from vendors in the Old Port and prepare their own dinners on the patio. Throw a log in the fireplace and watch the evening stars.
And, of course, the restaurants. Puerto Peñasco is known the world over for the quality of its seafood. Shrimp harvested here are truly world-class and supplemented by wonderful crab, oysters, flounder, scallops, squid, octopus and more. Sonoran beef is of outstanding quality.
Eco–adventures sponsored by CEDO
Join the flow of activities at CEDO by participating in these natural history explorations of the desert and the sea designed especially for you and your family. All activities start at the CEDO Marine Science Center at the CEDO facility in Las Conchas. For more information about CEDO and/or their eco-activities, check out their very nicely done web site at www.cedointercultural.org.
Las Conchas Home Tour
Each year CEDO docents organize a spectacular tour of beautiful Las Conchas homes. Join us on Saturday, March 5th, 2005 for this annual fun event! Tickets are only $15 each and are available at the Las Conchas gate and the CEDO visitors center (the Earthship).
Annual Fall Fiesta
The annual CEDO fundraiser has become a local institution. It is arguably the best party of the year, complete with live music, dancing, silent (and not so silent) auctions, drinks, good food, and visiting with neighbors and the kind of really interesting people that Puerto Peñasco has become noted for. Join us again on TBD when we party down and support CEDO activities in the process! The theme of this years fiesta is "Planting the Seeds of the Future!"
JJ's Cantina
JJ's is your quintessential beach bar located in/on Cholla Bay. Soon to be a historic landmark, maybe sometime in the next century or two, it offers muchas cervezas along with the usual bar drinks and house specialties like cherry bombs and sex on the beach (those are drinks, not events) and pretty darn good tostadas (my favorite) made by the lovely Glenda. John and Joseph, the owners, also sponsor the Santa Claus Club, a Christmas event that benefits local children's charities, and some of the more outrageous and fun events to be found anywhere! Check their web site for the latest event dates and updates at http://www.jjscantina.com. A few highlights on the current calendar include:
- Hobie Cat Sailboat Races
- Bathtub Races
- Over the Line (OTL) Softball
- Angler of the Year Contest
Fishing Derby
Sponsored annually by the Cholla Bay Sportsmens Club, this event (really a series of events) culminates with a fish fry and awards party in late October at the CBSC Fry Shack in Cholla Bay. The Fish Fry is lots of fun and a great feed! Check the Rocky Point Times for a listing of upcoming events.
Off-road Vehicles & Personal Watercraft
Please note that the Las Conchas Association does not allow Jet Skis or off-road vehicles such as dune buggies and ATV's (quads) to be brought into the gated community. Fireworks are likewise prohibited. This helps to keep the noise level down and ensures a quieter environment for residents and guests alike. If cruising around by ATV or personal watercraft sounds like fun (and it is), don't be discouraged – there are ATV and watercraft rentals in Puerto Peñasco and we can provide referrals to reliable rental agencies.
