- Take Highway #85 to the Lukeville / Sonoyta border crossing. You will not need any special documents, unless you plan to travel beyond Puerto Peñasco. The crossing is closed from midnight to 6 AM local time. If you are traveling down Highway #85 from I-10 watch your speed, especially between Gila Bend and Ajo, as that stretch is patrolled heavily.
Be sure to have registration certificates for your automobile and any auxiliary vehicles, e.g., trailers. In a pinch, a notarized statement that you own the vehicle in question will usually suffice.
Mexican auto insurance can be purchased from vendors along the way – several are located along the highway in Ajo and Why, and just before the crossing gate in Lukeville.
Gasoline is available at Ajo, Why, and Lukeville. All the gas stations seem to close by about 10 PM. There is a large Pemex station in Sonoyta and several stations in Puerto Peñasco. There are no services between Sonoyta and Puerto Peñasco. Unleaded regular gasoline in Mexico is price controlled at about $2.50 U.S. per gallon.
Note: ATVs and Jet Skis are not allowed into the Las Conchas gated community, and fireworks are prohibited.
- Follow the main road into Sonoyta, and turn left at the stop sign onto Highway 2, towards Hermosillo.
- Just past the Pemex truck stop, as you approach the downtown area, the road splits – follow it to the right onto Highway 8 towards Puerto Peñasco. Vasquez Curios y Licores will be on your left as you pass.
- As you reach Puerto Peñasco there is a stop light just before town. (The sign will indicate Cholla Bay to the right.) TURN LEFT HERE and follow the boulevard through town, across the railroad tracks, and turn right at the Pemex station onto Fremont Blvd.
- Proceed to the Océano Rentals and Sales office for check-in. Your key will be waiting for you there.
- Go back out Fremont Blvd. towards the Pemex station, then turn right onto the Las Conchas entrance road, just across from the gas station. Follow the road to the guard house and on into Las Conchas.
- Follow the main road about 1 ½ mi. You will see a sign that says, "CEDO." Do not turn there, but proceed another ¼ mi. and turn right just past a small sign that says, "Section 1."
- Hacienda del Mar will be the first place on your left. It is large and tan and has two driveway entrances with arches and painted flowers. There is parking just inside either entrance.
